Miniature Shetland Ponies trot into the Belvoir Shopping Centre to raise funds for local children - 14 Apr 14

Miniature Shetland ponies from Leicestershire-based charity, the Phoenix Children’s Foundation, will be returning to the Belvoir Shopping Centre on Friday 25th April, from 10am. Visitors to the centre will be able to meet, greet and pet a few of these cheeky characters.

Established in 2006, the aim of the Foundation is to provide disabled and seriously ill children with the vital equipment that they need on a daily basis, but also to give them unforgettable experiences. The charity organises pleasure flights, as well as supporting the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), helping to build children’s confidence and giving them a sense of independence, as well as creating treasured memories.

Whilst the Phoenix Children’s Foundation travels the country with its ponies helping to spread happiness and bring a smile to the faces of the disabled and ill children that they visit, they also support projects closer to home. The charity is currently raising funds for Harry Culwick from Packington, near Ashby-de-la-Zouch, to help finance vital life changing therapy as well as a specialist car seat and trike. The Phoenix Foundation also raises money for a local 15 year old boy from Coalville with downs syndrome to help him take weekly riding lessons at his local RDA centre.

The ponies are now regular visitors at the Belvoir Shopping Centre, having last visited in November 2013 when nearly £300 was raised in just a few hours.

Melissa Wright, from the Phoenix Children’s Foundation, commented: “We solely rely on public donations to keep the charity going. Without the support of the public we would not be able to supply these children with the life changing equipment, therapies and opportunities that they need. When we have been to the Belvoir centre in the past people have been incredibly generous. We’re looking forward to returning again and letting the people of Coalville meet the ponies”.

Speaking about the charity’s visit to the Belvoir Shopping Centre, a representative from the centre said: “Our shoppers have loved the ponies in the past, they cause quite a stir when they visit! It’s great to be able to support such a worthwhile charity that does some great work locally”.
