People of Coalville and surrounding areas have the opportunity to do something amazing and come forward as a blood donor at an information day on Friday February 3, 2012 held at the Belvoir Shopping Centre.
Everyday, blood enables doctors to save the lives of patients in emergencies; to help mothers and premature babies survive childbirth and to make planned operations possible. But blood is only there if people give it.
NHS Blood & Transplant (NHSBT) need to collect 7,000 donations of blood a day to ensure patients get the lifesaving treatments that they need; to put this in perspective, Leicestershire hospitals alone use around 1,100 every week.
A spokesperson for Belvoir Shopping Centre said: “It is for this reason we invited NHSBT to come along and give information to the local community in an effort to increase local donor numbers. With only 4% of the eligible population regularly donating, it really is important that people sign up to give blood and return on a regular basis.”
Holly Mason, spokesperson for NHSBT, said: “This awareness event is a great opportunity for people of Coalville to find out more about becoming a donor or where the local sessions are. Our team will be on hand to give advice, and information about how to help to save a life! It only takes one donation to help save and treat up to three lives; you can make a huge difference to patients in need”.
Anyone who would like to donate for the first time should be aged between 17-65, weighing at least 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health.
